Student-made Television!

Our students need a mini-DV camcorder and DV tapes which will support students who have taken the initiative to form an A/V club. They want to start their own in-house television program, covering news and commentary of our school, district, and community.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. K.'s classroom raised $447

This project is fully funded

Our high school serves a diverse group of urban students, most from neighborhoods with serious long-term poverty. Our focus and goal is to provide our students with a hopeful vision, to empower these teens to create big dreams and goals for themselves, and to instill in them the knowledge and dedication that will allow them to pursue and achieve those dreams. Although I am an 11th grade math teacher, I'm also working in my role as technology coordinator to support the project described here.

Earlier this year, a group of our students took it upon themselves to form a "Media Club"-- they worked after school hours to learn web design, mostly self-taught, and have completely rewritten our school's website. With that project complete, our students have turned their group's focus to television production. They've already produced their first 10-minute film: a promotional video about our school. This video was filmed in short clips using one student's digital camera, and edited with free software on a school computer, but without a proper video camera, they're unable to do long-form video projects, they have limited editing options, and they cannot produce high-quality video recordings.

The next step for this group's video program is to get a decent-quality digital video camera and DV tapes, media on which to record long-form interviews and multiple "takes" of a vision, to be chosen and spliced together in the editing process. Together with a few other basic tools, these students will be able to create some really professional-looking videos.

In our urban setting, there are many excellent colleges and universities, several of which have prominent television, video and journalism programs. Members of our media club have expressed interest in applying to these programs, and the experience that they gain in hands-on, professional-quality video recording and editing will be crucial to our students ability to realize that dream.
