Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My hilarious, frustrating, raucous, heartbreaking, wonderful kids of English 8, seeking escape from the war-zone schools of their city, enrolled in our school. We are a public charter school serving varied races of low-income families who seek an equal opportunity of gaining a college-prep education. The routines of our school center around a strict ethical code that rewards teamwork and respect for peers and self.

Being a public school, we are fettered by meager funding. We teachers buy our own copy paper and dry erase markers, and we ELA teachers buy almost all of the independent reading books for our classroom libraries.

It's a fact that good readers become good writers. It's also a fact that excellence in ELA = excellence in other core subjects. The foundation of academic success is "making" kids want to read. Kids will read if we offer books on topics that are real and relevant. Every single book in my request is a suggested title from The Center for Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning (http://www.culturallyresponsive.org/toolkits.html) These selections reflect the authentic experiences of Latino, African American, and Asian young adults. These three communities make up the bulk of our student body.

Sadly, book drives generally yield musty copies of A Tale of Two Cities, 60's cookbooks, and dog-eared Harlequin romances novels. Your contribution will allow me to help kids discover that THEY LOVE READING by providing them with books that deal with themes they can connect to in their lives. I have yet to find any kid, no matter how much he or she "hates" reading, turn down a book in which they can see themselves.
