Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach English as a Second Language to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade immigrant students in Redwood City, CA. What really motivates them and makes them excited about learning English is when it is something real, real to them, or immediate. What I'd like to have is a digital camera (because it's cheaper and easier in the long run) so the students can take pictures of themselves that they can then write and read to us about and take pictures of our local walking trips and activities and then write about it and talk about the photos. Middle school age kids are the centers of their own universes, and anything that relates to their likes and dislikes is really captivating for them. We use iMac computers in the classroom, so the camera would have to be able to work with iMacs.
My students could also learn to use the camera and become photographers and document their school lives. Every year I have three classes of roughly 25-30 students each, for a total of 75-90 students.
My students would be thrilled by the photo-taking experience, and it would be a great motivator for them to need to read and speak English. We could share the photos with other classes and with the students' families.
Most of my students come from poor families where picture taking is still a big deal. Most don't own computers. This would be an exciting adjunct to their sometimes more challenging grammar and spelling activities.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
