Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach seventh grade in a public school in a low income community which has a lot of heart.
My students saw the movie Freedom Writers and were inspired to write their own stories. Their homework assignment is to write in their journals every night and they fell in love with writing. They would like to expand their horizons and have begun to write their own nonfiction books. We have laptops, but no printer to print their work and help create the books. The interest in writing has also sprung an interest in reading and they are in need of new choices and modern stories to help them appreciate all that writing and reading have to offer them.
The new printer will enable the students to print their own Freedom Writer journals and begin to create their own books and see themselves as authors. The library books will show them that their writing will improve the more they read and they need to be inspired and encouraged.
Your contribution will make it possible for my students to see their names in print and realize that writing is not only for some, but that any one can do it if they are inspired to do so.
