Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third year teacher at an elementary school in San Jose, CA. I teach a first/second grade combination class of 20 enthusiastic and eager learners. I am responsible for teaching language arts, math, science, social studies, art, music, and physical education.
When I was in first grade, I remember learning about the life cycle of the butterfly. Our teacher brought in monarch butterfly larvae which we watched become butterflies. This was one of my most memorable experiences as a student in first grade, and I would love to recreate it for my students this year.
For this project, I will need monarch butterfly larvae, food for the larvae, and a habitat for the larvae as they grow and change into a chrysalis and finally full monarchs. This experience will provide my students with a very real example of life cycles (science standard), as well as helping to teach sequence of events, prediction, and comparing and contrasting (three of our language arts standards). My students will also keep a science journal where they draw sketches of the monarch larvae as they grow and develop, as well as provide written details of the larvae's growth.
Again, watching monarch larvae grow and develop into butterflies was one of the most memorable experiences of my first grade life. I hope to be able to provide my students with this same memorable experience. With your help, I am sure I can make this a reality. Thank you so much from all of us in Portable 3!
