Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My two classes of seventh grade students will learn hundreds of new words this year in our social studies course, but it would help them immensely to have their own dictionary at home to look up definitions, synonyms, pronunciation, and illustrations of their new vocabulary words. Since many of my students in Washington Heights don't speak English at home, a comprehensive but easy-to-use dictionary will be an especially valuable learning tool. Every Thursday, I introduce the students to five new vocabulary words that they will need to know for our social studies lessons that week. I hope to have the students look up the words that night for homework, use them in a sentence, and make flash cards, but most of the students don't have access to a high-quality, student-friendly dictionary. After getting good definitions for the words, we do exercises, play games, and practice using the new vocabulary that week, and then on Wednesday, the students have a vocabulary quiz. Every quiz is cumulative, so the students practice using the words all year and cement their understanding of the vocabulary. The students do not just memorize definitions, but they learn to use the words every day. One of the first words we learn is articulate. All of the students learn that they will finish seventh grade able and learn to articulate their ideas much more clearly with the aid of the new vocabulary! The Merriam-Webster's Intermediate Dictionary is a wonderful student dictionary that has an advanced range of words with easier-to-understand (but still comprehensive) definitions. There are over 700,000 words and 1,000 illustrations, supplemented by features particularly helpful to social studies students, like the names of figures from history, mythology, and the Bible, place names, and signs and symbols. Serious vocabulary instruction is a fundamental component of my social studies class, and my students will learn to turn to their dictionaries daily and cherish them as an indispensable academic tool. Please help us purchase the books! The sooner we have them, the sooner we can start earnestly improving our class vocabulary and establishing our ?weekly words? routine!
