Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I currently teach forensic science, which is being offered for the first time this year. This is an elective course for upperclassmen. The school is a public high school in New York City with a focus on science and the environment. We have a diverse student body (economically, racially, and academically) which can be seen in the forensics classes.
Because this is the first year this course is being offered there are zero supplies. Due to budget cuts throughout the district, there is no money to buy supplies. The students are very excited to be taking the course. In fact the demand was so high that the school had to open an additional section to accommodate all of the interested students. They eagerly await the many laboratory activities that they associate with forensic science (such as fingerprinting, blood typing, and entomology). I have been able to keep them engaged thus far as we are covering basic observation techniques, which do not require many supplies. Going forward, however, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to teach them the various lab procedures and techniques without any equipment.
I have chosen this kit because it is very comprehensive and will provide my students with many opportunities to practice the various techniques. The kits include units on fingerprint evidence, trace evidence, DNA evidence, blood evidence, and questioned document evidence. Each unit contains at least 4 activities and 5 case studies, which enable the students to practice different ways of doing things, as well as study examples of how the techniques have been applied in real cases. The kit also includes investigation literature and a virtual lab for the computer. Because this kit is so comprehensive, it will provide my students with activities for months to come.
With your help, my students can get the true CSI experience! Your support will enable several classes of students to see real world forensic applications and learn that science can be fun! Thank you!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
