How important is playtime? In my classroom, very important. I am a Kindergarten teacher at a high poverty Title 1 school. We have a very high percentage of ELL students. In my class alone there are 9 children who do not speak English.
My students absolutely love playtime, no matter what language they speak. This is a time in our day when everyone is at the same level. It gives my students a chance to interact and develop oral language.
In our classroom we need a pretend and play stage and sets of puppets to allow for my students to engage in dramatic play. I am currently taking classes to learn about the benefits and the impact that oral language development has on learning to read and have learned that it is huge. My goal as a teacher is to have every child reading before they leave my classroom. In my school that is not always an easy task. I am always looking for ways to help make this an obtainable goal.
When my students come in at the beginning of the year, ELL or not, they have very little language development. Your help will ensure that my students have the materials they need to improve in this area. I love to see the smile on my students faces when they are able to let their imaginations run wild!
