Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a new teacher about to start my first year this coming Fall at a high-need urban school district in New Jersey. I am going to be teaching a full-day Bilingual Kindergarten class with 21 Hispanic students with very limited English language knowledge.
As you can imagine, Kindergarteners need so many tools in order to learn the basic reading and writing skills. I am faced with a huge challenge of providing them with the supplies they need to learn. I have very limited funds available from my school and since my goal is to help these students learn English while I help them in their native language, I need to apply many different techniques to help them gain adequate language skills. Children at that age need lots of visuals with pictures, tactile tools, and music to help them learn.
The white boards and magnetic letters will help them practice spelling syllables and words by using their sense of touch to feel the letters as they see them and recognize them. The alphabet flash cards and books will provide a great visual for them as they can see the letters and pictures of words that begin with these letters as they learn the sounds and are able to identify them with words they know and are learning. The CD will provide them with lots of songs of common things like the days of the week, months of the year, greetings, and rhymes that will help them practice language skills.
Your help and generosity will provide my students the ability to learn basic language skills that children need to start reading and writing. This is going to be so wonderful as it will help them develop their native language as they learn English which is proven to help their transition into the English language a lot easier. This will help these students blend in and become a part of the American culture, which is my goal. You will make it possible for my students to read and write and be ready to go to first grade, which will ensure their success in their latter years with the basic skills they need to achieve this.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
