I am a science lab instructor at Gillespie Elementary School. Gillespie has a population of over 700 students. More than 90 percent of these students are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Chicago has recently adopted the Chicago Math and Science Initiative as a means of improving math and science aptitude through integration of the two subjects and hands-on activities. I would like to further enhance this philosophy with the incorporation of technology. Technology is the key to the future. In order to be competitive in society, students must be able to operate many different forms of technology. Unfortunately, many of my students live in households that don't even have a computer. Most of their exposure to technology takes place in school. At a recent workshop, I was introduced to the PASCO PasPort system. At the workshop, we conducted experiments with the temperature probe, motion sensor, and the cart and track. I would like to have these items available in my classroom. I believe the use of technology would make learning physics principles fun. Not only would these materials be used for in-class experiments, but students would also be able to devise science projects that would utilize this technology. Approximately 150 students in both 7th and 8th grades would have access to these materials. Students tend to be more engaged when learning is fun. The PasPort system is truly fun. Moreover, it allows students to utilize technology to learn physics principles.
