Help Struggling Readers Grow With Graphic Novels!

My students need a variety of graphic novels to improve their reading.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Most of my students are two or three years behind in reading and writing. I teach sixth- and seventh-grade literacy at a low-income school. The vast majority of my students are special-education or ESL, and they struggle in school.

The sixth- and seventh-grade students I teach do not like to read. They cannot understand the books written for their age group because they are too hard, but they are bored with the books they are able to read because they were written for young elementary-school students. They need to be reading every day to move forward quickly, but they are not excited about most of the books they can read and, as a result, do not like to read.

However, my students LOVE graphic novels. Graphic novels are the perfect solution for these struggling readers because they are written for an older audience, but still have pictures to aid comprehension. A variety of graphic novels will help my students get excited about reading and help them move toward grade level.

Your contribution would give my students the opportunity to read something they understand and enjoy. It sounds simple, but for struggling readers, it is a difficult combination to find. Graphic novels will provide the means for my sixth and seventh graders to improve their reading skills and experience academic success, which will hopefully motivate them to continue to work towards proficiency.
