Our school has a very healthy music program that includes band, chorus, violin, keyboard, guitar and percussion ensembles in addition to a strong general music curriculum. We are a K-5 school with nearly 1300 students of low socio-economic status and diverse cultures. We also have a very large special education population.
Although we have numerous performing ensembles, it is difficult to include students with special needs in classes like band, where the physical demands are high and the number of students large, because the ability to give individual attention is limited.
I was in a handbell ensemble in college and found it to be a wonderful way for people who have limited physical and/or mental capabilities to be able to participate in a music ensemble. It is also wonderful for very young students who do not yet have the physical dexterity and coordination to play an instrument. Each student can be responsible for one note in a melody and simply ring that note at the appropriate time.
With your generous gift, students with special needs will be given more opportunities to participate in ensembles next to their mainstream classmates. This will not only give these special children a sense of pride and accomplishment, but will increase the compassion of their classmates as they work together as a team to make beautiful music!
