Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach second grade at a title one school. Forty seven percent of the students are economically disadvantaged. I teach the SAS (school for advanced studies) class. I have 13 identified gifted students. Many of these students need motivation to work to their potential.

One of the second grade Social Studies standards is to understand the importance of individual action and character and explain how heroes from long ago and the recent past have made a difference in others' lives. In order for students to make these discoveries they need access to grade level appropriate biographies of famous historical figures. Our school library just doesn't have enough biographies to go around.

As I mentioned before, my students have immense potential, but they need a little extra motivation to push them towards their goals. Rather than simply read a biography, I would like to give my students an experience they won't soon forget. This is where the Historical Wax Museum comes in. Once I have a set of biographies, each student will choose 1 biography to read. Each student will use this resource to transform into their famous historical figure. Each student will have an "exhibit" in our Historical Wax Museum. For each exhibit students will need to write a short speech in first person as their figure. They will also need to find an appropriate costume and make a backdrop for their exhibit. Other classes will be invited to come to our museum. They will listen to the student's speeches, look at their costumes and backdrops, and try to guess who the historical figure is.

Help make history come alive for my students! All we need to make our Historical Wax Museum are the biographies. You can make this memorable experience possible for my class!
