I teacher 32 special education students with a variety of disabilities. These range from learning disabilities to physical and emotional disabilities. These students come from regular classes for remediation to my class daily. Because these students learn in a variety of modalities, it is my job to teach to these modalities using whatever material I can find.
Teaching math is always a challenge because there are limited ways to teach math concepts. I am always looking for creative and innovative ways to teach to my students. Students need to see concepts, understand them and be able to apply them both in my classroom and back in their regular classroom. I have a supply budget of $250 each year to purchase everything I need for my students. Because these students come from a regular classroom, I do not have the luxury of begin able to request school supplies so I must purchase everything that I need. This greatly limits what I can purchase in addition to supplies.
I would like to purchase a basic set of math DVDs as well as a new and interesting set of manipulatives. The math DVDs will give me and additional teaching source. In this age of technology, students are more apt to watch and listen to a video than to the teacher. The set of manipulatives are a new set that uses the fast food concept to teach basic math skills. What could be more fun than learning fractions using a hamburger, or base ten using french fries? Teaching students with learning problems is always a challenge but having these materials would give me one more tool to use to help these children be successful.
Children with learning difficulties learn in many different ways. By funding this project you will help children by giving them one more way to learn math concepts and make it fun to boot!!!
