From Denmark to the Boogie Down: Grendel Meets the Bronx
My project needs 12 copies of a "kid friendly" version of the epic poem, Beowulf.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. O.'s classroom raised $80
This project is fully funded
I teach 6th grade science in a wonderful middle school in the Bronx which serves a diverse population of students. I am also the advisor to a group of 15 vibrant, beautifully precocious young ladies. In advisory, we focus more on the student as a person and try to help them develop into better students, and eventually into well-rounded individuals.
I have noticed through discussion, etc that my girls have a weak foundation in classic literature. I would like to help pique their interest in reading more "meaty" subject matter by having a book club centered on the epic poem, "Beowulf". A culmination to the book club will be us going as a group to see the new movie of the same name.
What I think would best facilitate this is a set of books for us to read together. This way we can read, discuss, draw parallels, etc as a group which will undoubtedly make the girls more comfortable about reading something written hundreds of years ago. (And knowing that they get to watch a movie depicting the characters they are reading about can't hurt either!)
Your help will ensure that my students will have a positive experience in reading a literary classic, which can be the gateway to them exploring other classics and/or important literature.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
