My students need 2 post-it tear-off easel pads, 1 Write Traits flip chart, 3 boxes of green pens, and 1 table-top writing supplies center.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. M.'s classroom raised $188
This project is fully funded
Middle school teaching has always been my passion. I teach at a middle school in Florida, teaching primarily 7th grade Language Arts with one class of 6th grade Language Arts and one class of 6th grade Science.
I was moved from one school to another within the first month of school due to student enrollment, and quickly found out that I no longer have my own classroom. I float around the school on a cart, but am unable to provide my students with a good writing center like the one I had at the other school. The cart has plenty of room, but I do not have the funds that I need to boost their writing. It is also very hard to show examples when the rooms into which I go for classes rarely have the board available for writing on by myself.
Our district has been focusing in on the Six Traits of Writing. The trait flip-chart would be of great use since I have to "float". I could easily use it on our discussions of the traits of writing and how to use them. The chart would not be so big that I couldn't take it with me.
While at a conference, I learned of activities I could do to show off the traits and teach them. One was a group story creation using the post-it easel pads. Students would create a story line as a group (the first two lines of a story) the first day. The next day the students would read the post-its and decide which one was from a real book (which would be placed in the post-its). The students learn to value their writing skills. The post-it pads would also be very helpful due to the "floating" issue and the lack of writing space for notes that are used in every class session.
Leading from this activity, I wanted students to write a short story based on one of their own story lines. Checking for conventions is a tricky process, and green pens show off corrections much better than using the same color as well as not being offensive as the color red. The writing supplies station would be used to store the pens and paper for students, as well as used post-it sheets.
It is hard to be a teacher, but even harder to be a floating teacher. I love what I do but I find it difficult to have fun lessons when I cannot utilize the board or have basic writing tools available for the students. With your help, seventh grade students will be better prepared for the annual writing assessment tests and for life.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
