Moving Past the Dead White Men: Culturally Diverse Books

My project needs 33 copies of Life of Pi and 21 copies of Autobiography of My Dead Brother.

I am a first year teacher at the Jeremiah Burke High School. The school has temporarily been moved to the King Middle School site while the original high school building is being renovated. As a first year English teacher I am building my class library. I have gone to yard sales, library sales, Goodwill bookshelves, and retiring teachers' rooms to collect books for my classroom. I have a nice collection for Independent Reading books but very, very few class sets for instruction. My school has a small list of classics available, of which I plan to take advantage. However, the literature available does not reflect the culturally diversity of the school or of my students. I am asking for class sets of Life of Pi and Autobiography of My Dead Brother because I am convinced these books offer the same literary value as the classics currently available to my students. These books raise similarly though-provoking questions and will generate wonderful discussions. In addition, they will work towards our class goal of accepting and affirming diversity within our class and within our world. Many of my students are English language learners and/or reluctant readers. The graphic novel form of Walter Dean Meyers' Autobiography of My Dead Brother appeals to these students because the text is illustrated throughout the story. These illustrations work to support reader comprehension without "dumbing down" the story. My students and I thank you for your help!
