Serious Presentations For 7th Grade Science Scholars
My project needs a data projector to make serious science presentations a possibility.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. H.'s classroom raised $866
This project is fully funded
Hello, I am a 7th grade science teacher at Barratt Middle School located in an under served community in Southwest Philadelphia. I joined the Teach For America program as a senior in college, and I have taught at the school for one year. I am now entering my second year as a science teacher at Barratt Middle School.
We, at Barratt, lack a sufficient number of resources, which can include textbooks, computers, and even paint to cover the cracks in the walls. Now that the school district has huge deficits in the budget there is going to be even more belt-tightening.
I am writing to request help in obtaining a data projector for my classroom. I am told that the school once owned a data projector, but that it was either lost or stolen before the time that I arrived there. As it stands, there are televisions in the school. However, many do not work, or are too outdated to be hooked up with a computer. The reason that I believe that our students would benefit from the data projector are numerous.
First, there are a number of interactive science websites that could be accessed as a class. Since there are no computer labs for the students to explore these websites, we would be able to explore them as a class with the data projector.
Second, the School District of Philadelphia has purchased (at great expense) access to a terrific science resource: unitedstreaming. This website has thousands of movies that explain in great detail many of the scientific concepts that are so hard to understand without real world examples. The students at Barratt Middle School, however, have no way to access this information without a data projector because all of the videos are online.
Finally, I would be able to give more interactive presentations to the class. A data projector can provide more stimulating notes, music, and experience in the room. The applications for this tool are too numerous to list here, but I feel that the ones I have mentioned are compelling enough reasons to want to donate. You can help change the experience of urban youth. You can help boost test scores in science - one of the subjects that requires our attention most. Finally, you can help provide meaningful and interactive lessons to students who have been neglected by the system.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
