Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I will be teaching a course in Biology/The Living Environment to students in four tenth grade classes. Our school is the International School at Prospect Heights in Brooklyn, NY.
Given that our students are all recent immigrants, I vary my teaching by differentiating instruction. One way to do this is to do some 'hands-on' applied science activities that build on prior knowledge but also are exciting and have 'real world' application.
The solution is this kit that will be an extension of a class where I will be showing a clip from "CSI Miami" and then students will be working on solving the murder mystery and then we will do some DNA analysis.
My project needs one kit each of the DNA Murder Mystery Kit and the DSM II DNA - From genes to Proteins Complete Kit for a class on Biotechnology. These kits contain materials for solving a murder mystery and a kit demonstrating the process of how proteins are derived from DNA. The kits will be used for 4 classes that I teach.
I am requesting DNA Murder mystery kits sold by Delta education. Students will understand the link between proteins and genes using materials in these kits.
This hands-on project will provide the students with a more realistic view of biotechnology and specifically will make the subject of Forensics come alive!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
