And that impact will last far beyond this school year. \r\nTeaching students how to read nonfiction effectively, especially in middle school, requires explicit instruction, and these new texts make that possible. They help us teach students to analyze text features like headings, charts, and sidebars; evaluate sources in an age of misinformation; cite evidence in writing and discussion; summarize complex ideas; compare multiple perspectives; build academic vocabulary across content areas; and conduct meaningful research. Because the collection is contemporary and high-interest, students are naturally drawn to it, engaging with topics that feel relevant to their lives rather than outdated materials. \r\nIn our school, reading looks active, social, and student-centered: students discuss surprising facts in small groups, annotate with sticky notes, flip to glossaries and indexes to deepen understanding, and check out nonfiction simply because it interests them. Nonfiction is no longer just for research projects: it’s becoming part of students’ independent reading lives, driven by choice and authentic engagement.\r\nSeveral groups of students are especially benefiting from our new nonfiction collection. Reluctant readers who may not gravitate toward novels are eagerly exploring books about sports, technology, natural disasters, and social justice, finding the structure and visuals more accessible and engaging. Students who love facts and details are thriving as they become the “experts” in the room, excitedly sharing what they’ve learned. Additionally, students who previously struggled to see themselves represented are connecting with diverse biographies and contemporary issue-based texts that reflect a broader range of voices and experiences.
