Funded Jan 1, 2016Dear Donors,
I want to sincerely thank the people who donated to this project. I know that dry-erase markers may not seem like the most exciting project, but it is easy to underestimate how important it is to have these basic supplies. Before I submitted the Donors Choose application, many days in the classroom were filled with frustration, my own and that of my students, when it came time to do our whiteboard activities and lessons. The constant ringing of student voices saying, "Where are all the markers?" "These are all dried out!" and general arguing over the few supplies served as a huge distraction from instructional time, and a distraction to the lucky few who had the supplies they needed. Eventually we stopped having whole class games where students shared their answers and explanations on whiteboards because there never seemed to be enough markers! This was such an unnecessary hindrance to student progress.
Fortunately, another teacher at my school taught me about Donors Choose and help me set up an account. I was blown away by the generosity of the donors (including other teachers and people I have never even met!). In class, I would regularly give the students updates on how the project was doing and we all waited eagerly imagining a day with no more "marker struggles." When the project became fully funded, we were all so thrilled! When the markers arrived, the disagreements were greatly reduced and students got on task much more quickly when it came time to focus. It is very satisfying to be able to observe the students explain their ideas to each other with the aid of drawings, maps, and math work. It offers a fresh perspective on many concepts, allowing for not only "Ah ha!" moments, but also moments in which the students realize that they are capable of teaching their peers. It is amazing what a huge difference the gift of markers makes in our day!
Additionally, it seems that the knowledge that the supplies were gifted to us causes the students to treat the materials with greater respect- they know that they are a gift from other people, and they appreciate that. They could hardly believe that people who they had never met would donate money to help them learn! Due to this, we are using the dry-erase markers more frequently and taking better care of them. I am so pleased because, at this rate, I am going to have a good quantity left over for next school year! So thank you for your donations, it has made my life a lot easier, our classroom more harmonious, and learning more fun!”
With gratitude,
Teacher
