Books are a personal experience, but with dwindling budgets and overfull classes, some we sometimes approach reading as a one-size-fits-all endeavor. Through this project, I will double the number of titles in our classroom library, creating the potential to turn "assigned reading" into exciting exploration. Each student enters the classroom with a unique bundle of experiences, questions, and ideas, and our reading should reflect that individuality. Moreso, students love to read when they have options which spark their interest. To that end, I am adopting a "book club" model for literature instruction, where students choose from an array of texts according to their own inclinations and form small groups for analysis and discussion. I take the role of facilitator, guiding students in how to examine texts rather than "teaching the book." The (student approved!) books in this project are carefully selected for their compelling stories and literary merit. They complement one another, as well as our current titles, in themes and complex ideas. For example, John Dollar (a novel featuring a group of schoolgirls lost at sea) pairs with our current set of Lord of the Flies. The Pianist make an excellent companion to our set of Night. Connections between books such as these stimulate deep questions and insightful conversation thanks to their differing perspectives on both common and extraordinary experiences. By combining high-quality books with freedom of choice, classroom reading becomes an engaging, thought-provoking experience rather than an activity to complete.
