Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a class of 10-14 students with various disabilities, including learning disabilities and autism. The children are in grades 2 - 5. The community in which I work is in a low-socio-economic area. Many of the children have no books at home and their parents do not read or speak English, and some are illiterate in their native language as well. In order to encourage them to read at home, I provide a weekly packet of books students can borrow, on their independent reading level. They read daily as part of their homework and complete a reading log. When this reading log is complete (18 entries), I let them choose a book from the "Book box." This will help the children build up their home library and encourage them to continue daily reading habits by letting them choose a book of interest to keep. Some of the children will read up to five books a night in order to complete the log. The children have been so motivated that my book box supplies have run low (mainly consisting of donated used books and books from the local dollar store). I would like to replenish their book supply with some quality literature. You can help impoverished students improve their reading and instill a love for reading in them forever by contributing to their at-home library.
