Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a low-income, urban high school where students face a great deal of adversity. I want to give my students the inspiration to achieve in life by using the guiding principles and concepts of Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
Over 75% of my students receive free or reduced lunch, meaning they live at or below the poverty level.
These students often face many obstacles, and sometimes going to college or achieving anything in life seems far out of their reach. I was recently reading an article about Stephen Covey in this week's USA Today. The article told of how, during his presidency, Bill Clinton cited 7 Habits of Highly Effective People as one of three books every worker should read to "dramatically" boost the nation's productivity. "Chief Executive" chose 7 Habits as the most influential book of the 20th century, and companies like FedEx, Hewlett-Packard, Conoco, and Saturn trumpeted Covey's principles. The article also stated that when Hurricane Katrina blasted into Mississippi, a local utility company got the power back on in 12 days. Those responsible said that they had steeped their culture in the 7 Habits, including "be proactive," "think win-win," and I want my students to learn these ideas.
My Project
I think my students can benefit from learning these concepts that can then help them get into and STAY in college, and also help them in the workforce. Concepts such as "begin with the end in mind," are perfect for low-income, urban students who need to set goals and change their mindsets to focus on success. The book will also help my students deal with adversity, overcome obstacles, and help solve conflict. I would like for my students to read the book with their parents, and I would hope to create some lesson plans using the book that could help with parent and family engagement.
I believe my students would benefit greatly from reading the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
Because there is so much emphasis on high stakes testing, there are no longer courses in character building or integrity or even coping or conflict resolution. This book could really help my students develop these dispositions and skills and, in the long run, will help them get into college, stay there, and be successful in life.
