Games are fun! My math students are big fans of playing games to practice their new math skills. However, the playing of most of these games is limited to school time because students don't have the materials at home. I would like to create binders for students to have at home to play these games.
I teach 6th graders in a northern suburb of Chicago.
We are an area of moderate poverty. My students enjoy learning and LOVE to play games and be active with their learning. Their learning is so much more enhanced when they play games. When given choices about how to practice, they inevitably choose games.
My Project
I would like to create binders for students to keep and use at home that contain some of the games we use in the classroom so they can practice at home. In the binders, I will have the basic supplies to play the games (decks of cards, dice, pencils). Directions for games will be sent home so students can insert them into their binders. I would like students to keep a log of the games they play (and with whom).
My Math Kits for Home project is extremely important to me.
Too often, as students get older, we forget about providing them fun ways to practice their math skills at home, even though it is a common practice in younger grades. I really want my students to be inspired to play and practice their math skills at home.
