See what Ms. Colleen is requestingHelp me give my students a calm place when they need to leave their classroom, sit in a study carrel to focus on work, complete a social-emotional lesson, then prepare to return to their assigned classroom community.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students primarily come from a low-income, urban setting. Many are medically fragile and have complex needs and have inconsistent food security. We are an inclusive, public, Montessori school in Milwaukee, WI.
I love my students' resiliency and tenacity.
They are eager learners and crave greater social-emotional skills. As an example: one student asked to join my small group to learn more about how to express her feelings and find a resolution to problems. She showed improvement in a short time and invited others to join as well.
The materials and supplies that I am requesting for my students will transform an empty room into a calm, quiet place where students can come to increase their focus, be productive and prepare to re-enter their classroom communities. This room will serve our students who, for a variety of reasons, find it difficult at times to be in their classrooms for an hour or more. The study carrels will be set up in separate locations with a lamp for each. Teachers will provide work for the students to complete in this quiet place. If the student exited their classroom in a disruptive manner, staff will assist them in preparing to re-enter their classrooms community. The stamps and stamp pads will be used for our low-verbal students. As a restorative practice as they will stamp on paper a specific emotion for each classmate and hand it out upon returning as a way of repairing the relationship.
The donations to this project will help to improve my students' understanding of school as a safe place to learn and increase social-emotional learning.
