Kitchen Lab Teaches More Than Just Cooking

Help me give my students materials for their kitchen lab. The lab will not only teach them life skills but functional math skills, from measuring to managing a budget to how to shop at the grocery store.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I'm the teacher of the Intellectually Disabled Moderate (IDM) program at my middle school. This is my third year teaching, and I'm still working on building up my resources. I work at a low-income school. Our school has few resources, and most of the families I work with are at or below the poverty level. I don't want to let lack of resources stand in the way of my students’ education. I want to be able to provide them with the best learning experience possible.

I have a very diverse classroom with different ability levels.

I would love to provide all my students with opportunities that will help them progress. Unfortunately, it is difficult to accomplish my goals when resources are limited and the demand is high. I have 6th through 8th graders, and all my students are at different ability levels. I have nonverbal students who need different resources than my students who are struggling readers. I created a classroom environment that runs by centers. Some centers lack the resources for the students’ levels. I want to create centers that will enrich all my students’ learning, build a 21st century classroom, and include more art integration.

My Project

My team and I have worked very hard to create a kitchen lab that we can use for our students in the Alternate Curriculum. We are just getting started with the Kitchen Lab but we cannot wait to continue it next year. Our students will be working in this lab as independently as possible in this hands-on approach to learning. Our end goal is to guide our students to do things on their own. With this kitchen lab, we will go over safety, cleanliness, shopping, budgeting, planning, following directions, and so much more. Students will work on easy to follow recipes. They will first look at a recipe, create a shopping list, follow a budget, and execute the recipe. Many skills will be learned with this project, especially mathematics.

This project is requesting some items that will help us get started next semester.

We need a water filter since we will be using water for many recipes. This filter will be helpful since the water jug is at the bottom, making it easy for students to help replace the water when it runs out, and a safer appliance to have. We need some cooking books with children in mind. The two books contain easy to follow recipes. We need ingredients to get us started next school year, such as cookie mix and flour. These items will help us get started as we begin the kitchen lab adventures.
