My students attend a public high school with an enrollment of nearly 2,000 in a large urban district. The district is located in an area of highest poverty. One hundred percent of the students enrolled receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students are diverse in race and ethnicity.
All have experienced trauma and hardships that significantly impact their progress socially, behaviorally, and academically. They have a range of diagnosed disabilities that further impede their success in school and social environments. Many have experienced homelessness, foster care, and food insecurity at some point in their lives.
My students are agents of change! They repeatedly give of themselves when they have so little of their own. They complete multiple service-learning projects throughout the year that impact their community and it's residents in a positive way. They do so willingly and tirelessly, often knowing that they will return home without the basic essentials they need for themselves. They deserve to breathe life into their own education and learn to empower themselves to forge their desired future.
My Project
My students are preparing for their futures earlier and earlier every year. In order to make a successful transition from high school to post-secondary education and/or competitive employment, these students need to have strong skills in communication, personal finance, and employability. A great way to develop these skills and more is to organize a t-shirt pop-up shop in our high school!
Financial literacy suits us to a "T"!
Students will construct a business plan and market their shirt design ideas to staff, students, and families. They will conduct surveys and research to determine a good price point for their product and develop an effective marketing campaign. Each quarter will focus on a new campaign with fresh ideas so multiple students can be involved in this learning initiative. Students will calculate operating costs, profit margins, and learn how to project future sales. They will count money, make deposits, and decide to spend or invest back into the business. Through this project, students will develop financial literacy, collaboration and communication skills, and a strong work ethic to achieve a goal. They will also have a vital part in supporting school spirit with quality products they personally design and manufacture.
