My students are enthusiastic, compassionate, and love to learn new things. I teach Family and Consumer Sciences, also known as Home Economics, to high school students. My students look forward to learning life skills. One of the classes I teach is Child Development. Every year it tends to be a popular choice. Most students do not have experience with babies or understand the development process. They love coming to class and having open discussions about anything related to parenting and child development.
Fredrick Douglaus said “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men”.
By exposing students to child development in high school the hope is that they will be more prepared and ready for the responsibilities associated with parenting when they are an adult.
My Project
Having an electronic baby will greatly enhance our child development class. The students learn about topics ranging from conception to the toddler years. We focus on the development of the baby, birth, and how to take care of a baby. The electronic baby will give each student the opportunity to take care of the baby for at least 24 hours or longer. The electronic baby will show students how much care and attention a baby needs. It will also give them experience getting up through the night with a baby and putting a babies needs above their own. We will be discussing child abuse and what to do if they are overwhelmed when taking care of a baby as well as the finances associated with having children. We will tie topics to how a teenager would be affected if they had to raise a baby while in school.
By donating to our project, you will be providing students with an opportunity that could change their life for the better.
Taking care of the electronic baby tends to be an eye opener to students. The electronic baby can also be programed to demonstrate how much care a drug affected baby will require. The baby opens up a wide variety of important topics students need to consider. The electronic baby creates a temporarily difficult situation to help prevent lifelong difficulties.
