My Students

In our 7th and 8th grade math classrooms, we work constantly on improving our creative and critical thinking and problem solving skills. Our classroom mantra is "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." We want to learn and to be excited about mathematics every day.

My students come from a high poverty area and many lack basic resources, but they are excited to come to school and be in a classroom where they can be involved in "doing" math rather than simply hearing about it.

Anything that can build excitement in STEM encourages them to delve deeper into mathematics and engineering and develop essential problem solving skills. Funding is always an issue, and I need to supply my students with not only materials for STEM challenges but also with basic supplies like pencils, paper, markers, notebooks for journals, and a myriad of other things.

My Project

Our classroom works on collaboration, small group work and student discussion of mathematics. We need these dry erase easels for each small group to collaborate on mathematics problems daily.

Research shows that mathematics learning increases markedly when students are given the opportunity to work in visibly random groups on vertical, non permanent surfaces.

Our classroom needs six dry erase easels to allow students to collaborate in these groups and increase our learning of mathematics.

Middle school mathematics students need to be engaged in "doing math" and not just hearing about math in a lecture format. Working problems and showing thinking on VNPS (vertical, non-permanent surfaces) allows students to engage mathematically with a small group of peers, share with the whole class, and engage in the problem solving process in ways that will improve their learning.
