Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are predominantly Latino and African American students from one of the lowest income neighborhoods in our city. They are eager for the opportunity to bring their unique perspective to STEM careers. They are excited about college and career opportunities in technology, and they see robotics as an emerging field that presents them with unique opportunities.
They are kids who grew up with Superheros and space operas, and they see robotics as a way to put a real world spin on super powers.
Many of them explored simple circuitry in my after school Makerspace club and they are ready for more. They want to build things that amaze and astound, and that solve real problems in new ways. They are inventors and creators looking for opportunities to apply their creativity.
My Project
My robotics classes are filled with kids who are waiting to get their hands-on experience, but with one small problem: we have not robots! Students have explored the history of robotics, the use of robotics and automation in the nation's industry, and have explored just what a robot IS and what makes something a robot.
My students have started to code in Scratch and are developing their programming skills, and now they need robots to put those skills to use.
The Sphero SPRK+ robots are a perfect introduction, since the Sphero Edu system implements Scratch to control these nifty little robotic balls.
My students will learn how to do event-driven robotics programming using the Scratch language they are already using, and will learn to control the wide variety of sensors the Sphero SPRK+ robots use, to challenge each other and explore. The Sphero Edu system will also accept Java Script and will be ready for them when they are ready for a text-based language. These fun little spherical robots are fun and not intimidating for the newest of users, but are also sophisticated enough to keep my students on the ball!
