Help me give my students dice, magnets and games as an introduction and ongoing practice of mindfulness techniques to improve focus, attention, emotional regulation, and increased self-worth.
Our students have overcome great obstacles to be here to work towards high school graduation. Our students are often severely credit deficient and come from all over the Davis County School District. When we learn the individual life stories of our students, we recognize most of them have struggled with some incredibly challenging personal issues that have been barriers to meeting their educational hopes of graduating from high school. Some of these common challenges are intergenerational poverty, mental illness, homelessness, and lack of family support. Though our students have their share of challenges, they face them with courage and determination. They inspire us, their families and the larger community with their resilience and perseverance.
My Project
I am creating a new curriculum for all current and new students in our ongoing student orientation sessions which introduces them to mindfulness concepts and techniques. They will rotate through stations using mindful coloring with these great sets of coloring pencils, mindfulness creation utilizing magnetic ball sets, mindful stacking and stress resilience through Tenzie dice game, a utilizing two mindful / self-esteem card games increase knowledge of mindful concepts in social learning situations and positive peer interaction and feedback. Our student population desperately need more coping skills to overcome the many mental health and environmental barriers they face in working towards their graduation goals. Mindfulness rotations will give them a variety of skills in a fun and engaging learning environment.
