When thinking of words to describe my students the following comes to mind: motivated, determined, unyielding. Our students are encouraged to be the best they can be. Our students have a spirit and uniqueness all their own. Our students are a family.
When my students come to school, they are coming home.
Our school is a high poverty, high needs Title I school. We have gone through distress from tornadoes in recent years and we want to show our students the sunshine and positive no matter the situation. Regardless of hardships, our students come to school and are excited to learn and grow.
My Project
My goal is to enrich students lives by teaching them about cultures and art around the world. By having looms and quality yarn in my classroom, I will be able to let my students explore the world of weaving! Cultures all around the world use weaving as an artistic expression. With all of the technology that we have today, students do not always get exposed to important hands on experiences.
Weaving is often times an art that is forgotten about.
In exploring this, students will be able to learn a new skill, work on hand eye coordination, and be able to see cultural connections in art. Students love to do things that are hands on and this type of weaving can help keep students actively engaged in their learning and provide them with a special experience that they otherwise would not have.
In supporting this project, you are helping my students gain skills that they can carry throughout the rest of their lives. Students will be able to make connections with all forms of textile art and realize how those connections affect them in real life! Students will start viewing clothing, rugs, and other textile materials as much more than just everyday objects that we have become accustomed to!
