Puzzles to Provide Stress Relief & Emotional Management
My students need puzzles that they can work on when they need a break or something to calm them down from an emotional episode. They work great because they still challenge the students!
My students are truly amazing and are the future of our community. They are wonderful kids who are working hard to break barriers and prove that they too can be successful. We all remember what being a teenager is like, but imagine being a teen with special needs and how that can affect the way you approach the world and others. Many of our students struggle with skills that society deems "simple" or "easy", which means that they inevitably start at a disadvantage to others.
Preparing my students to be successful, happy, intelligent and self-sufficient individuals is the most important aspect of my job.
By providing them with engaging, motivating, and educational materials, I hope to encourage them to challenge themselves well beyond the time that they spend in my classroom. I am constantly looking for things that will get them to think outside the box and continue to open their eyes to new and exciting experiences, ideas, and opinions.
I love my students and I will do just about anything to make sure that they get the materials they need in order to be the most successful and intelligent individuals they can possibly be.
My Project
This project is simple; puzzles. While it may seem silly to provide puzzles in a classroom, they actually come in handy during emotional outbursts or when students are struggling to regulate themselves.
Many of my students struggle with managing their emotions, stress, and ways to cope with their feelings when they feel "out of control".
By providing a safe space for these students to work on a puzzle, it not only gives them an activity to work on, but also takes their focus away from the tension and anxiety they are feeling.
Having these in my classroom and in our school's Wellness Center will allow for students to work on a technique and activity that can bring them out of that dangerous "fight, flight or freeze" mentality and back down to reality, where we (the teachers) can then talk with them and work through the emotions they are struggling with.
