My students need a rug for a comfortable seating space on which to gather as a class for morning meeting, number talks, reading/writing mini-lessons, social studies discussions, and our science kick-starters.
Our school is a close-knit community. Our school serves a variety of ethnicities, socio-economic levels, languages, and educational backgrounds. More than 40% are economically disadvantaged and greater than 50% are ELL. We celebrate this diversity in our school and in my classroom. As a result, our school is proud of the successes we see in both local and state assessments. Our students consistently score above district and state expectations on standardized tests like NWEA because we have the support of our community. Most importantly, though, is the fact that our school culture is positive, nurturing, and student-centered. As a result, our students, staff, and families are proud of the work we do together.
My Project
Every student wants to be a valuable part of a community. A space on a rug allows students to gather quickly and comfortably as a group for the important work ahead. This is where we work and laugh together as a class and where new partnerships are formed. Each day students gather together on the floor as a group for morning meeting, literacy lessons and number talks. We meet together as a class community, break into smaller work groups, or hold individual coaching sessions on the floor together. Currently, my students meet together on a cold tile floor. The space is undefined and is uncomfortable. A large rug will aid in creating these spaces by allowing students to gather quickly and have a spot that is a comfortable place to learn.
