Our school services students PreK through 5th grade from a wide variety of backgrounds and family structures. Many of our learners struggle with poverty. We also have many students who receive services for ELL or special education. While some students have opportunities for extra-curricular activities outside of school, many of my students only experience music and the arts in the school setting.
By giving my students a high quality music education experience, I hope to build confidence, foster inquiry and help inspire a lifelong appreciation for music and the arts.
Supporting music in schools helps students understand history, connect with other cultures and experience a unique human phenomenon. I hope that through my work as a music educator my students have a greater understanding of the world around them.
My Project
Boomwhackers are pitched tubes that are played by striking them on a hard surface (hands, legs, floor, etc.). They are bright, colorful and easy for students to play because they require no special skills-all they need to do is pick it up to play.
A classroom set of boomwhackers will help my students develop their rhythm skills, learn to play in an ensemble, and understand how notes fit together to create new sounds.
Playing in an ensemble is important because students not only learn to play their own part, they also learn to listen and respond to other musicians. Through musical performance students build confidence, learn to collaborate with others, and become more creative. I hope that you support the musical growth of my students through this project! Thank you.
