Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a Title I school in South Carolina. One hundred percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Around 30% of our students come from non-English speaking homes, which puts them at a disadvantage when learning to read and write. Most of our students' families also lack the resources to provide books and other educational supplies for their children to use at home.

Despite their economic disadvantages, my students are eager to learn how to read and write.

They love experiencing new texts that they can read at school and take home to share with their families. My students enjoy reading, and I want to ensure that they will continue to read and learn throughout their lives.

My Project

My students will not use these materials directly, but rather, will have a stronger teacher of reading! These professional books will provide me with a repertoire of teaching points that will help me differentiate and target the needs of my students. The way the books are written are very clear and provide guidance on how to implement and modify my reading lessons to ensure that all students learn. I will be able to support reader independence in my small group lessons based on what I learn from these resources.

This project will have a HUGE impact on the way reading is taught in my classroom.

All of the students in my class are reading below grade level. They need a consistent, cohesive curriculum to support them. Teaching skills in isolation have been shown ineffective for struggling readers. These resources will help me align my reading and words instruction more seamlessly to help these readers make the growth they deserve.
