Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About half of our kindergarteners arrive speaking only English. The other half speak only Spanish. For many of our Kindergarteners the restrictions of a highly structured daily routine is a brand new experience making school a lot of hard work.
More than 50% of our students receive free or reduced lunch, which tells us that many of our students arrive with limited prior experiences in the arts, let alone a good breakfast.
Our students will make good use of props and instruments to add fun to structured activities as well as expressing their own music and movement ideas.
My Project
Many of our younger students don't have any first hand experience with musical instruments. Having free play and exploration time is an important part of student learning by providing students the opportunity to develop comfort and confidence using instruments. Having these sturdy instruments designed for children helps ensure that students won't have the stress of damaging something special. The scarves will be used for creative movement with music to encourage a natural response to music and ignite the creative spark. Some of these instruments will be added to the collection of sound effects that students will add to stories and songs for the exploration of timbre and expression.
