My Students
My students come from a small rural town in southern West Virginia. Our area is one of those facing the opioid epidemic. The kids very much look forward to coming to school, seeing their friends, learning in a loving environment, and participating in music! (I may be biased on that last one.)
Music serves as a creative outlet where they can explore their hidden talents!
With so much weighing on their minds from home, music class allows the students to take a break and express themselves.
My Project
Orff instruments, such as Xylophones and Glockenspiels, are my choice of instruments for teaching students how to read music. The instruments have the letter names written on them and are laid out in front of the students. The bars are removable, which allows the teacher to pick and choose the notes the students are able to play, making it easy for them to create amazing music!
Currently, class sizes of 20-25 are having to share only 7 instruments (that would be 40-50 students sharing them for a concert).
Each year I am trying to increase my Orff instrument collection by 1-2 so the students will no longer have large groups crowded around one instrument.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
