Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There are many great things going on at our school. Our school’s distinguished practice is health and fitness. We focus on many ways to incorporate activities to keep our bodies and mind healthy. This past school year, four schools competed in track and field. Several of our students placed and earned medals. This year, we brought music class to our school. Also, this is the second year that we are providing an after-school orchestra.
As a teacher of students who come from low-income families, I push them to persevere and be the best that they can be.
Living close to a tourist attraction, many of my students and their families are unable to go because they can’t afford it. Our school is a Title I school where the majority of the students receive free or reduced price lunch.
Some of my students live in motels or a crowded room. Some of my students are responsible for caring for their younger siblings as their parents work long hours. Whatever the circumstances may be, they come to school to learn.
My Project
I always enjoyed reading posts from Humans of New York on Facebook. From it, you learn about people from all aspects of life. What moved me the most was reading about homeless people and why/how they became homeless. I want my students to learn about empathy, kindness, and tolerance by learning about their fellow peers through our own recreation of Humans of New York. Instead, our project would be called Humans of (our school's name).
I feel that my students don't truly know each other and from that, they can't truly display empathy.
By donating to my projects, students will be utilizing interviewing skills and interview students at our school. With the cameras, they will take a portrait of that person and upload it to the class page. Since we only have Chromebooks, we can't store pictures on the computer and will be utilizing the external hard drive. Lastly, the students will print out the portrait to give to the people that they have interviewed.
My hope is through this project, they will learn about the people around them. That everyone has a story. That everyone has something to share.
