This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is located in the poorest congressional district in the nation and all students are eligible for free and reduced lunch. The school is predominately Latino and African American. 30% of the students are English language learners and some are the first of their families to graduate. Despite all of this, 100% of our graduating seniors are college or career bound.
Our students need the same opportunities as any other student in the country.
They work hard to succeed without letting anything get in their way. As a community school, each year our graduation rate has increased and we want to make their learning as meaningful and purposeful as possible.
My Project
Each year the students do different real world projects to make their learning more engaging and authentic. This year, we are are continuing to do our history through journalism project. We will use our cameras, mics, and memory cards to film interviews and report stories. Additionally, they will be using their pens and notebooks as reporter's journals.
Good journalism is needed now more than ever.
It's essential that we teach our students to report honestly, authentically and accurately. It's great they have New York City as their background to dig deep into their communities and this city and find stories that others may ignore.
Journalism and teaching are one in the same. The job of a good reporter is to teach their audience something they didn't know before. Whether it's the experience of their fellow new arrival classmates or what's being done in our city council meetings, the students will lead the way.
