This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I'm a 1st grade teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district in Chicago. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they walk into class full of childhood curiosity for the world around them.
Science is a hands-on discipline, students learn best when they are active explorers.
Science for young children involves asking questions, probing for answers, conducting investigations and experiments, and collecting data. My students want to explore all that science has to offer, but unfortunately are unable to do so because of limited supplies. They are ready to learn new ways to make a positive difference in the environmental world and you can help by supporting this project!
My Project
Our first grade class is using a worm composting station so that they can then create the soil we will use in the future school garden, creating a sustainable ecosystem. The composting bin is ideal for large scale production and observations our first graders will enjoy.
The objective for this project is to instill in our students a sense of awe and desire to protect the natural resources we have left, similar to the beliefs of the Tom's of Maine company.
I'm excited to teach about the amazing ability of nature as our worms cycle materials into natural resources. What better way is there to stress the importance of sustainability then to demonstrate it in the classroom? All we need to teach these lessons is your help!
