I am a prekindergarten teacher in NYC. I have a group of very young and excited students. A majority of the students in my class have working parents who do not often have enough time to spend with them.
Parents send their children off to school and then head off to work, knowing that they can trust their child to our care for the day.
We try to create a warm environment where students are excited to learn. Topics that my students will learn this year will include water, plants, babies, where they live and all about themselves.
My new batch of Pre-Kindergartners will be entering school for the first time. Do you remember how scary the first day of school was for you? Or your own child? My goal is to make it a place where students will want to come each and every day.
My Project
My students are learning to take ownership of their feelings. One way we are trying to help them take ownership of their feelings is to have these pocket charts state different feelings. As students walk in in the morning, they will move their name/picture to show how they are feeling.
Students are invited to share with the class why they feel the way they do.
As the day progresses, they are encouraged to move their feelings card to show a different feeling and share with the teacher or a friend why they moved their card. These pocket charts will also be used to teach my students how to chart and read graphs.
