My students need the wild brought inside; although we live a rural area, the majority of my students live within the city limits in apartments, duplexes or public housing with limited exposure to plants and creatures. Students could observe the lifecycles of plants and animals with a variety of animal habitats made for preying mantises, ants, worms, lady bugs, worms, frogs, and plants. We also need batteries for our camera to document the changes that happen to the plants and animals.
My Pre-K class is comprised of 20 four and five year olds. We are a Title 1 school and live in a high poverty area. Over 80% of my class receives free or reduced lunch. 50% of my students come from a single parent household.
You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives. ~Clay P. Bedford
Where do frogs come from? What do worms do all day? What are roots? What do lady bugs eat? Children are naturally curious about everything around them, especially living things. I would like to be able to provide my students with a close up view to answer their unending questions about nature. I would also like to be able to provide my students with memories of how they grew and changed during the year with photographs. I literally take hundreds of pictures of my students and our discoveries during the year and use a tremendous amount of batteries.
In order to provide my students with an up close view, I would like to create a "wild" area in my room where we can watch seeds grow into plants, eggs to insects, and find out what worms eat. We need specific animal habitats for worms, ants, lady bugs, preying mantis, and frogs. We also need a root vue farm that shows how plants grow roots and a classroom greenhouse. The changes in our wild area and my students would be documented with photographs and we are in need of batteries for our camera.
Don't you remember the fascination of watching a colony of ants working or a worm wriggling in the grass? Your help would make it possible for these wonderful students to observe these animals close up every day and have photographs of their experiences.
