Science Soars, but Supplies Stall

My students need lab supplies that we do not have the ability to replace when they were used up or broken. We need a little more help to keep using our donated lab equipment!

My Students

How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed? A review of student grades and school-wide data indicate that students with disabilities are the lowest performing sub-group at our high school.

The students in my classroom are students who have not succeeded in traditional classrooms and are repeating classes and making up units.

Many of them have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. My classes serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, and specific learning disabilities. Currently 50% of my students have a documented disability. The typical student in my class is significantly behind and many struggle with basic spelling and number sense. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population. Our site is the original school building for the district. I teach all of the science classes for the entire school in my classroom.

My Project

All students need to learn science to graduate, thrive, and go on to college or employment. The school district has done a great job in maintaining the school site, built in 1881. However, funds are limited and do not stretch to the consumable supplies needed to provide a great learning environment. Basic lab supplies such as a mortar and pestle, stirring rods, staining trays and parafilm are consumed. New classroom supplies lifts student spirits, keeps them safe, and motivates them to learn.

Your donation will help to improve academic achievement and provide a vital stepping stone to lifelong success.

Lab Science disciplines that transfer into daily life include, cleanliness, safety, respect for materials and each other and hopefully a lifelong passion for learning.
