Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first grade bilingual teacher in the Chicago Public Schools. My students are very happy to attend school every morning, interact with their peers, and learn new things every day.
My class is comprised of 24 energetic students who come to school ready to learn regardless of their economic conditions at home.
The majority of my students come from low-income families, receive free lunch, and do not have the economic resources to buy books and educational materials to use at home.
My Project
The New Generation Sky Watchers kit will offer my students the experience to conduct hands-on investigations and build background knowledge outside the classroom.
I would like to offer multiple strategies for expanding my teaching earth and space science topics at home.
This science kit will offer the possibility for students to conduct experiments at home with the help of their family members. Students will not only take the materials to conduct experiments at home, but also they will have access to digital materials online.
Students will have the opportunity to make direct observations of objects day and night, they are expanding on the concepts of rotation and revolution, temperatures in sun and shade, etc. Finally, students will synthesize information and use models to teach the rest of the class about one of the topics they have studied at home. Students will take a pre- and post-unit assessment to measure growth and knowledge.
