Our classroom seamlessly blends the artistic pursuit of Theatre with the engaging and extremely important technology skills required for success in any field. This year, we are focusing on technology integration (through computer programming) and on creating engaging classroom productions.
Despite coming from one of the most dangerous and impoverished neighborhoods in one of the largest U.S.
school districts, my students come to school everyday - eager to learn and to tell their stories. They inspire me with their hard work and big dreams. I want to use our Theatre classroom, and our new technology, to empower them to share their story with the world and to create positive change.
STEAM education is essential for preparing students to enter the workforce and college, but as with so many changes in education policy and ideology, the Arts get left behind.
Drama education and STEAM are intrinsically linked - the technical and academic skills required to design costumes, hang and plot lighting designs, plan and build sets are powerful skills for any student to learn.
This project will focus on lighting design education. I want to put powerful tools in my classroom so that students can be using the same technology used by professionals and push their critical thinking and problem solving skills to the next level. The materials in this project are lighting instruments and related accessories (cables necessary to keep the lights running, and a truss to hang the lights from) that students will need to design and execute their own theatrical lighting ideas for upcoming classroom productions. We will be collaborating with the STEM classes here at our school to ensure cross-collaborative learning is happening, and that students are working at their highest abilities.
