This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students enter my classroom daily bursting with energy, eager to talk with their teacher and classmates, and ready to change the world. They work hard each day to make connections, work hard, dive deep with their thinking, and be the absolute best person they can be. Outside of the classroom, however, they face many challenges and uncertainties coming from a background of poverty.

A zip code should never determine a child's success.

All of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch, and many students receive backpack food on the weekend. My school maintains a school supply closet to make sure that all students are prepared to learn each day, but being prepared to learn doesn't always equal success.

My Project

My students need three ViewMaster Virtual Reality Viewers and two iPod Touches for virtual fieldtrips. Did you ever watch The Magic Schoolbus and desperately wish to be in Ms. Frizzles's class? Ms. Frizzle would always lead her students to the depths of the Earth in her magic bus to get a hands-on view of the world around them. With these VR Viewers my students will have the opportunity to travel to all of those amazing places!

VR Viewers allow students to experience virtual-reality based field trips to places they cannot visit on a school bus.

In order for students to understand the "whys" of many lessons they learn in school, it is crucial for them to have connections to the world that are broader than what their reality allows. Virtual field trips allow students that live in poverty the opportunity to actually travel the world, all while in the comfort of their own classroom!

Our science and social studies curriculum is very challenging, and it requires students to be familiar with terms and places that my students have not yet experienced. Virtual field trips will allow them to walk on the moon, explore a rainforest, observe a Western prairie, take a trip aboard the Mayflower, and truly interact with the world around them.

A set of three viewers will allow students to rotate through the field trips. The iPods will be attached to the viewer and access the virtual reality app. Please help my students "travel" the world!
