I teach middle school in a very high poverty area. I have six eighth graders, one seventh grader and one sixth grader in my fabulous special education class. There are ten fabulous students in this class and they are all extremely talented. I believe that I will get a wonderful answer from a donor.
Let's face it, students in this high poverty area generally gets the crumbs off of the table if that. They have no textbooks, no writing materials, no reading books ( print or audio). For the first time my students are interested in reading; we are about to finish Up From Slavery next week and will begin on the African philosophers. For the first time my students are actually learning something and they are so interested in every topic that I present to them. One of my students is even talking about going to college.
I need 9 copies of the following book titles: A Raisin in the Sun, The Fire Next Time, William Shakespeare's Othello, For Colored Girls Who Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Wasn't Enuf, and Things Fall Apart. These books would serve as a catalyst for the reading and writing program that I have already started for students within this ED Cluster program, I have a philosophy that if the students are exposed to something from their own culture they will be a level of success that will definitely follow from here and out in the world.
You will make it possible for my students to finally receive the materials that they deserve in order for them to be successful. I have discovered that these students are talented and gifted and I really need support in order to make this dream come to fruition.
