This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The smiling, eager faces greeting me each morning are a constant source of inspiration to work harder and do better. The majority of my students are English Language Learners and most live in poverty. On top of acquiring challenging grade-level content, they work doubly hard to acquire the academic English language skills necessary to thrive not only in school, but in whatever they choose to pursue after their formal education.

These students come from homes where money can be tight.

The pressures that come with low income follow them to school. As a Title I School, all students receive access to free and reduced lunch and breakfast. Some arrive hungry while others arrive not knowing where their family will sleep that night. Many deal with home situations that are not stable and can be traumatic. Despite challenges, all of our students arrive with optimism and energy to work hard. They are truly deserving of the best that public education can offer them.

My Project

My students are itching to get out and explore the world. A trip to the Exploratorium is an opportunity to see a new city and experience places they do not encounter on a regular basis. This alone is incredibly valuable as it expands their view of the possibilities that exist for them within the wider world. It also enables them to expand their learning beyond the walls of our classroom. With field trips like this one, students realize that learning happens everywhere and is a continual process that doesn't stop once the bell rings. The majority of my students do not have the means to access places like the Exploratorium without a field trip and without trips like this, many often do not leave our immediate neighborhood.

Upon arrival to the Exploratorium, my students will be seeing many of the scientific concepts they've studied brought to life in incredibly engaging and hands-on ways.

They will learn what it is like to examine the world in new and unusual ways all while having a little bit of fun with their classmates. This trip will sharpen critical thinking and problem solving skills all while sparking the innate curiosity children harbor. The benefits of this trip will last long after the day has ended. Any donation is deeply appreciated and essential to the success of our field trip. Thank you for your consideration!
